The Curse of Guerrilla Island takes place October 9, 2010!
By Silverback, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Staff Writer

Scabb Island, CA - When Davey Richards became Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion earlier this year, it was a career-long dream fulfilled. However, just as Davey reached the pinnacle of his career in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, his career outside of the company was about to take a huge leap forward as well. In June, Davey was invited to compete in the Best of the Super Junior tournament by New Japan Pro Wrestling, and thanks to his stellar performance Davey earned himself a position as one of the company's regular American wrestlers. While this is good for both Davey and the Japanese fans, it's not so great for everyone else, Pro wrestling Guerrilla included. Because of his outside obligations Richards would be unable to attend any of the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla events for the rest of 2010. Therefore, due to his inability to defend the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship on a regular basis, Davey Richards has decided to abdicate the title.

While it is unfortunate for a champion to lose a title without actually losing the match, Richards felt it was fair not only to the other competitors, but the fans of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla for him to step aside and then attempt to reclaim the title when the timing is more favorable, rather than continue as a champion in absentia. With this announcement coming just days after the conclusion of the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, it raises a very interesting set of questions. With his tournament victory and number one contendership, where does Joey Ryan stand in the title picture? Top contender? Interim champion? What about former World Champion and 2010 Battle of Los Angeles finalist Chris Hero? All of these questions, and many more, will be answered at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's The Curse of Guerrilla Island!

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's The Curse of Guerrilla Island takes place on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at American Legion Post #308 in Reseda, CA. Front Row Tickets are $30 each, and General Admission Tickets are $25 each, and they are on sale now on the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Ticket Page. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla's The Curse of Guerrilla Island is scheduled to feature:

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship Title Four-Way Match
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brandon Gatson vs. Chris Hero vs. Joey Ryan

-- After enduring four torturous rounds over the course of two nights to win the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, Joey Ryan thought his next match would be against Davey Richards for the World Championship. After all, Joey had to beat four of the top independent wrestlers in the world to get to this point, so the last thing he wants is for three other guys to waltz into a title shot because Davey Richards vacated the title. While the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Board of Directors can certainly understand Joey's position, a new champion must be crowned, and unfortunately, there is no clear Number Two contender for the title. Because of this, the title will be up for grabs in a four-way match at The Curse of Guerrilla Island.

However, that decision does not render Joey Ryan's 2010 Battle of Los Angeles win completely meaningless. If Joey Ryan does not win the World Championship at The Curse of Guerrilla Island, he will still be able to challenge the newly crowned champion to a future title match. It is with that safety net that Joey Ryan accepts the match, as he will face off with Chris Hero, and the remaining two 2010 Battle of Los Angeles semi-finalists, Claudio Castagnoli and Brandon Gatson, to determine the new Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion!

Tag Team Match
The Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark Briscoe) vs. The Cutler Brothers (Brandon & Dustin Cutler)

-- While the concept of brothers forming a tag team in pro wrestling is nothing new, the fact that so many sets of brothers have competed in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla is truly astounding. Currently, there are three sets of brothers competing as tag teams in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and while The Young Bucks and The Cutler Brothers have had their fair share of meetings (and the Bucks and Briscoe Brothers, as well), a match that has never taken place is Jay and Mark Briscoe facing off with Brandon and Dustin Cutler. Luckily that will no longer be the case after The Curse of Guerrilla Island!

After earning their first ever victory over the Young Bucks in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla at Night One of the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles, The Cutler Brothers went on to challenge World Tag Team Champions

Sucks that Davey got lost the belt, but this show looks awesome. Mainly looking forward to Cutlers/Briscoes, Goodtime/Taylor, and the main event. Glad Peter Avalon's back.

Seems like a pretty awesome build-up show for a possible November supercard weekend or day. Also, isn't it more obvious now that Joey's winning the title? Also, I like how one of their selling points is Brian Cage, who to about 75-85% of the audience does nothing. The only thing that 's missing from this show is Austin Aries. This company needs more A Double damn it.

(sidenote: Just because I'm curious, what's Paul London doing this weekend?)

As much as I love Davey, I kind of wish he wouldn't have won the PWG title now.

Damn it.... it's on the 9th!!! Damn the Curse....

On a side note:

Good matches. Great to see Claudio back. Gatson is only one win away to become PWG World Champ. No Bucks & No London... Damn

With Davey stripped we've got 3 disappointing World Title runs in a row.

This should be awesome. Hero/Joey know each other in and out and Gatson/Hero from Dio ruled. Really looking forward to Claudio-Hero and Claudio-Gatson scenarios in this match, as they could be show stealers.

Prediction: The safe route to take is Joey (he'll probably win), but personally I think a shock is needed. Have Gatson win and begin a semi-turn on the same night. He can hold his own.

If this is a straight-up fight it can be a seriously great match. Looking forward to how this plays out.

Prediction: Cutlers.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. Match of the night.

Prediction: Generico.

Really pleasantly surprised to see Goodtime in such a high profile match. Could very well be his breakout match. Should be very fun.

Prediction: C. Taylor.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... Classic Silverback.

As of writing, I'm thinking it's going to be Joey, Cutlers, Ricochet, Sexy Chuckie T, Rocky, Avalon, and who ever is facing Cage.

So Davey's got something better to do, eh? Sucks that PWG still isn't a priority. But I'm sure the Best of Super Bad English tournament is a big deal.

We should go back to the days where winning BOLA got you anything you wanted. It's not like a title shot is hard to come by, anyway. Roderick Strong gets like 2 every year. Joey should be awarded the title, and then declare himself commissioner.

Actually, the big deal is being a New Japan regular. That is quite a big deal.

I think this is a fair way to handle it though. Davey can always come back (since he isn't retiring now) when he has more time to wrestle for it.

I think that Joey will not win, so they can take time to book him into a better match to be his crowning achievement, and get the crowd back behind him. And his conquering the odds will look cooler if he loses dramatically in a 4 way and then wins the title later.

awesome looking show, glad to see Avalon back, surprised that Tozawa and Bonham aren't at the show although there the "and more" part, and if the Briscoes show up for a 3rd time in a row, should they be added to the roster?

The card looks really good and its a true shame Davey can't get one last title defense in.

"And more" won't be Bonham or Tozawa, those guys are bigger than that. It'll be CK Jackson or something. Most likely Cage vs. a member of Los Luchas. I hope it's a debut or awaited return though (Willie Mack. Charles Mercury).

Yeah, they should. The roster page needs a haul.

I notice Necro got removed. Good move. Why not remove everyone who isn't at least semi-regular? PAC, etc. Or maybe a "special guests" category for them.

I know this has a slim chance of happening, but I would f'n mark out huge if CC ended up winning the match and becoming the new PWG champ.

Interesting on Davey. There's an NJPW series that ends late this month. Didn't think the next set of NJPW cards would start before the PWG show. Other commitments?
