I've been watching some "retro" PWG DVDs lately and there have been a lot of matches that are overlooked by fans. This thread is ment to give those matches some much needed attention and hopefully help out newer fans look into matches that would help them get into the PWG product even more. That, and I'm really bored.
Debut Show: AXP vs. The Ballard Brothers
I'm not big on the Ballards, but their match with the AXP was really fun. Lots of fun team work from the AXP in this one, and a pretty good '03 tag match from PWG.
Bad Ass Mother 3000 Night 1: Hook Bomberry vs. Super Dragon
At the time, this match got a lot of praise from those who saw it. But the buzz around this match has died down and seems to have been forgotten. This match was really well worked and was a fun slow paced match. Dragon getting in a fan's face for not shutting up was also funny. Hook Bomberry lately hasn't been looked at as a serious worker by most fans, but this match, along with his match with Scorpio Sky(will touch on this later) showed that he can go with PWG's elite as a singles wrestler.
Bad Ass Mother 3000 Night 1: M-Dogg 20 vs. Colt Cabana
A really fun match, with Colt Cabana bringing out comedy gold. M-Dogg and Colt worked well and M-Dogg did a great job limiting his flippyness that is looked down upon by many smarks. Really fun match that should be checked out.
Bad Ass Mother 3000 Night 2: Adam Pearce vs. Joey Ryan
While Pearce's PWG work will mostly be remembered for his comedy stylings and heated feud with Frankie Kazarian, his short lived rivalry with Joey Ryan was really fun to watch. This match was a really good opener and Joey played a great spunky under dog going up against an old school heel veteran who will use anything he can to get the win. The story was fun and it helped setup a fun rematched the month after(will go into this later aswell).
Bad Ass Mother 3000 Night 1: Super Dragon vs. Colt Cabana
While Dragon matches get a lot of praise by fans, this one was a match that got looked over because of the Joey Ryan vs. Super Dragon match that took place in the next round. Cabana and Dragon worked well and had a really fun match. Colt Cabana is awesome.
Are You Adequatley Prepared To Rock!?: Hook Bomberry vs. Scorpio Sky
Getting back to Hook Bomberry for a minute, before he was teaming with Topgun Talwar, he was tearing things up in SoCal as a singles star. This match with Sky was so good, yet so overlooked by the match that followed it(Briscoes vs. B-Boy/Dragon). Sky as a singles wrestler is so much fun to watch, and this match is a great example as to why. This was Hook's last match in PWG before he suffered bad leg injury that kept him out of action for a year, but it was one hell of a way to go.
Are You Adequatley Prepared To Rock!?: Adam Pearce vs. Joey Ryan
At first, Pearce was supposed to wrestle TARO, and Joey was supposed to wrestle Bobby Quance. But with Pearce angry about the outcome of his match with Joey last show, he wanted to avenge that. TARO and Pearce got into a fight, Pearce took him out and Joey made the save and TARO let Joey face Pearce. This angle worked out well as it resulted in not only the best PWG Multi-Man tag match, but also an awesome brawl between Joey and Pearce and a great setup for the Joey/Dragon Guerrilla Warfare match.
Pimpin' In High Places: Chris Bosh vs. Excalibur
Before he was known for his ultracharasmatic promos driven by racism and sexual pervertions, Chris Bosh was a spunky babyface who's claim to fame was getting KO'd by Excalibur's lariat at the Debut Show. The build up to this match was pretty much the start of the transformation from the old Bosh becoming the Mexican hating Bosh that we know and love today. The match itself was so much fun and the heat was off the charts so to say. The angle at the end with The AXP and Bosh turning on PWG was so awesome, and the brawl that took place was also great. This match will get looked over because of the 6 Man Tag and AXP/Pitbulls, but this deserves some praise.
That's pretty much it for 2003. I'll bring more thoughts on some of the Pre-Reason For The Season 2004 shows as there are a lot of awesome matches that are overlooked from the Elks Lodge Era of PWG.
